'60s-era 'Batman' star coming to Simi Valley

  • The Memorial Day Challenger Tournament raised over $14,000 for the new Challenger field in Simi Valley. The event was co-sponsored by Simi Valley Baseball League, Santa Susanna Boys Baseball and Simi Valley Little League.   • Burt Ward shot to superstardom in the 1960s as Robin the Boy Wonder on ABC's mega-hit "Batman." During the height of Bat-mania, he teamed up with Frank Zappa to record a song called "Boy Wonder, I Love You." "I still have a copy," Ward says.
  • In addition to the rescue dogs they care for, Burt and Tracy Ward have their own animals, too. Burt is holding Rhino, an 18-year-old Mexican hairless, and Tracy is dwarfed by Minato, a 3-year-old, 160-pound Great Dane who stands 7-foot-3. "We rescued Rhino when he was turned in to a shelter by a breeder for being 'too old' at 12 years," Burt Ward said. "We were unable to get him adopted at that age, so we kept him, and now he is our baby, too!"
  • Mastiffs, Great Danes, Borzois and other giant breeds crowd into bed with Burt and Tracy Ward at their home in Norco.
  • Burt Ward's first week playing Robin in the "Batman" series was a harrowing one. "I was sent to the emergency hospital four different times," he said. "It was a dangerous show to work on."

Holy kibble, Batman! Robin the Boy Wonder is in the dog food business. And on Saturday, sans mask and cape, but with a replica Batmobile in tow, Burt Ward will be at the Walmart in Simi Valley to sign autographs and pose for pictures with folks who purchase a bag of his Gentle Giants dog chow.
