New political districts will have a profound effect on the careers of elected officials who now represent portions of Ventura County, and for those from outside the area whose districts may soon include parts of the county.
The district maps that have been in place since 2001, drawn by the Legislature with the intent of protecting the incumbent party in each district, created mostly districts with lopsided partisan splits. As the information below illustrates, the districts they represent now are politically safe for members of their party.
Under the draft maps released Friday by the Citizens Redistricting Commission, that will change — in some cases, dramatically.
The commission is forbidden by law from considering, or even being informed of, such political data as voter registration breakdowns or the residences of incumbents. The political data for the proposed districts listed below was supplied by private redistricting consultant Paul Mitchell of the Sacramento firm Redistricting Partners.
