Last Friday, Joe "Hoss" Janik, the strength and conditioning coach for Ventura fighter Victor Ortiz, picked up the phone and found Ortiz's manager Rolando Arellano on the other end screaming, "He tested positive for steroids!!"

Simi Valley's Tyler Sundeen is excited about this weekend's California Cup and the future of field hockey for the under-21 USA Eagles. "It's going to be cool," Sundeen, 18, said of the USA Junior National team. "Our goal is top four, but we'd like to make it to the finals."

Dustin Penner scored 17:42 into overtime and the Los Angeles Kings are headed to the Stanley Cup finals for the second time as a franchise after beating the Phoenix Coyotes with a 4-3 win in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday night.

Albert Pujols and the Los Angeles Angels will outspend the Oakland Athletics any day. So far this season, that's about all the Angels can do better than their AL West rival. Tommy Milone scattered five hits over seven innings and Kila Ka'aihue drove in the go-ahead run, leading the pesky A's past the Angels 2-1 on Monday night.

Two 65-foot oil spill recovery vessels were dedicated Tuesday at Ventura Harbor, the first in a four-ship fleet that will be operated by Clean Seas, a nonprofit company established in 1970.

Children visiting the California Strawberry Festival were introduced to terms such as "sweet spot" and "rally." These didn't have to do with fruit though, they were part of the SmashZone, a program that tries to make learning tennis fun.
