NSWC Port Hueneme Hosts First Visit for USNS Cesar Chavez (T-AKE 14)

USNS Cesar Chavez (T-AKE 14), a new construction ship, visited NSWC Port Hueneme for the first time Dec. 28 through Jan. 4. This was her first stop after leaving the naval shipyard in San Diego. The vessel is the Navy’s newest cargo ship designed to bring ammunition, food, fuel and other supplies to U.S. ships at sea.

The ship is named after Cesar Chavez who was a civil rights leader and farm worker organizer. Chavez joined the Navy at the age of 17 during World War II and served for two years. The ship was christened on May 5, 2012.

During her visit to Port Hueneme, she was assisted by NSWC Port Hueneme personnel who are the Navy’s subject matter experts in these types of replenishment vessels. A team of engineers, technicians and military personnel at NSWC Port Hueneme are responsible for ensuring that the Navy has a safe and effective replenishment system that allows ships to remain at sea indefinitely to fulfill the nation’s maritime missions.

NSWC Port Hueneme is a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command and provides the global United States Navy fleet with weapon system in-service engineering, logistics, and test and evaluation. Commanded by Capt. Bill DeBow of the United States Navy, NSWC Port Hueneme is located at Naval Base Ventura County, Calif., where it employs more than 1,900 personnel.
