Defense counsel now in San Diego

Anyone facing a possible court-martial or otherwise needing the services of defense counsel can no longer get in-person assistance at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) Port Hueneme, but must now acquire those services through a phone call or email to San Diego.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 1, the Navy’s defense counsel became centrally located in Defense Service Offices (DSOs), and the one in the Southwest Region is in San Diego.

Lt. Edward T. Griffis Jr., officer in charge of Port Hueneme’s legal services, said the change is part of a realignment of the Naval Legal Service Command by the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps. The command was comprised of Region Legal Service Offices (RLSOs) and Naval Legal Service Offices (NLSOs). RLSOs provided trial counsels for prosecution and general command services. NLSOs provided defense counsels and legal assistance.

On Oct. 1, the JAG Corps disestablished NLSOs. Their legal assistance mission was turned over to the RLSOs, which are continuing all their other duties, such as helping with powers of attorney and wills, indebtedness issues and family law issues.

Defense counsels are now coming from the DSOs. In addition to the San Diego headquarters, there are DSO branch offices in Bremerton, Wash., and Fort Worth, Texas.

The RLSO at Port Hueneme is in its same location: 2852 Harris St., Bldg. 1180, across from the Welcome Center. The phone number also remains the same: 982-3124.

The DSO in San Diego can be reached at 619-556-1684 or by emailing DSOWestAdvice@navy.mil.
