Animal Services issues July Fourth dog warnings

Ventura County Animal Services is urging dog owners to make sure their dogs are safely indoors during fireworks displays.

Officials recommend turning up a TV or radio so dogs will not hear the fireworks, which can scare them and cause them to escape. If a pet escapes, an owner should immediately visit the animal shelter at 600 Aviation Drive in Camarillo.

The shelter has 405 pets that need homes. Since Saturday, Animal Services has added 57 dogs to the kennels: 41 strays and 16 dogs surrendered by owners.

The costs of adopting a pet this week are $125 for cats or dogs. The fee includes spay/neuter surgery, microchip implant, a license, a health exam and obedience training for dogs.

Adoptions begin at Simi Valley Animal Services this weekend and every weekend thereafter. The address is 670 W. Los Angeles Ave. For more information, call 388-4341.
