There’s nothing like competing in a military boxing championship to get you ready for a 5K run.

Just ask Builder Constructionman DeAngelo Davies of the 31st Seabee Readiness Group. He finished first in the Feb. 9 Sweetheart 5K at Naval Base Ventura County, Port Hueneme, less than a week after he fought in the Armed Forces Boxing Championships at Camp Pendleton.

Davies’ time of 18 minutes, 34 seconds, was nearly a minute faster than that of the second-place finisher, Chris Beeler, who ended up with 19:20, and the 19:27 time of third-place finisher Paul Van Zuyle.

About 40 runners and walkers took part in the first lunchtime 5K of the year, held at the Bee-Hive Gym.

“It’s a beautiful day, and the turnout is good,” said run organizer Amanda Haskell, taking note of the unseasonably warm, high-70s weather.

Several of the walkers are in the NBVC Biggest Loser contest.

“This is a great opportunity for Biggest Loser contestants to burn calories,” said Ramona Pagel, who manages the Bee-Fit Health and Wellness Center and organized the 15-week weight-loss competition. “If you walk three miles you’re going to lose 250 to 300 calories, and 3,500 is a pound.”

Most of the walkers finished in about 45 minutes or less. The last-place finisher, who was pushing a jogging stroller, had a time of 49:52.

The first-place finisher among women was Builder 1st Class DeAnna Dimeo of the 31st SRG with a time of 24:41. Coming in second was Wendy Coffey at 26:53 and third was Micaela Pina at 27:11.

The next lunchtime run is the St. Patrick’s Day 5K on March 15. It’s being held at the Bee-Fit in conjunction with a health and wellness fair. Registration is at 11 a.m., and the run begins at 11:30.

There is no fee for these Morale, Welfare and Recreation 5Ks. For more information, call 989-7378 or 982-4726.
