The 2012 Active Duty Fund Drive in support of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) will be conducted March 1-31. The slogan for this year’s campaign is “Sailors and Marines Caring for Our Own Since 1904.”
The NMCRS provided assistance to 1,054 local Sailors, Marines and their families in Ventura County last year. More than $437,000 in interest-free loans was disbursed, as well as grants totaling $9,000. The majority of these loans and grants provided financial relief during emergencies, including:
444 clients were assisted with basic living expenses, such as food, rent and utilities.
312 clients were assisted with gas and other transportation expenses for vehicle operation.
61 clients were helped with family emergencies.
47 clients received loans to repair their vehicles.
32 clients received assistance to go to a funeral of an immediate family member.
In addition to financial assistance, the NMCRS provides budget counseling and interest-free loans for college courses, dispenses complimentary layettes to new parents and operates thrift shops.
Donations are accepted in the form of payroll deductions (allotments), checks or cash. Service members are encouraged to contribute by allotment since the donation can be spread over a 12-month period, thereby minimizing the financial impact on a member’s budget.
For those unable to make a monetary donation, the Society would be pleased to have their assistance as a Society volunteer. Call 982-4409 for information on the next volunteer orientation.
