Police and Fire: An off-duty Ventura County Sheriff's deputy opened fire Monday night after a thief allegedly tried to hit him with a vehicle on his property near Moorpark, authorities said. No injuries were reported in the incident.

The deputy was on foot at his private property in the 13000 block of Broadway Road about 9:50 p.m. when he confronted thieves in a vehicle and the driver tried to run him over, Sheriff's officials said.

The deputy fired "fired his weapon in defense of being run over by the fleeing suspects," and the suspects left the scene, officials said in a statement.

The deputy was not hurt and no other injuries were reported. No potential suspects showed up at local hospitals, said Sheriff's Spokesman Capt. Mike Aranda.

The incident sparked an intense search of the rural area with helicopters, police dogs and deputies on the ground, but authorities did not find the suspects, officials said.

The incident is under investigation. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave as part of standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, said Sheriff's Capt. Don Aguilar.

The deputy's name was not released this morning.

The shooting was the third involving a Ventura County Sheriff's deputy in less than a month.

On Jan. 27, a detective fatally shot a 47-year-old man who authorities said rushed at officers with a machete outside his Moorpark home.

On Feb. 3, a deputy opened fire after a driver struck him with a car following a short chase, hitting the suspect in the arm and grazing a passenger, Sheriff's officials said.
