The Rio School District’s Food Services Department is proud to announce the opening of the new fresh fruit and veggie Salad Bars at Rio Del Valle and Rio Vista middle schools. The "Love Your Heart" event took place during lunch service at both sites on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. The ASB organizations at both schools did a wonderful job helping promote the new salad bars in the weeks leading up to the premier. The new items where a big hit with the students and they where extremely excited to hear that the salad bars would now be a permanent fixture.
Several students where very happy to have a salad bar again. All the elementary schools in Rio School District have had fresh fruit and veggie salad bars for several years, but when students moved on to middle school they missed this option for lunch.
This is a wonderful opportunity to encourage our children to make healthier food choices. Rio School District Food Services believes that all children deserve access to fresh, healthy food. This is a key ingredient to academic success and a salad bar in the lunch room is a prime opportunity to expose our children to healthier choices. It could also help stem the rising tide of childhood obesity.
The salad bars also provide a wonderful opportunity to support the local farmers. Each salad bar is stocked with locally grown produce.
