A man who had plunged into the ocean off the Ventura Pier was fished out of the water, cold but alive this evening.

Rescuers said the man was taken to a local hospital after being rescued from the water.

The incident was reported at 6:46 p.m.

The man was rescued minutes later, authorities said.

There have been several such incidents in the county.

In April, a 19-year-old jumped off the Ventura Pier after friends dared him to do so, authorities said. Once in the water, he youth experienced severe distress, rescuers said, and he struggled to stay above water. A swimmer eventually rescued him and he was taken to Ventura County Medical Center for exhaustion and possible hypothermia.

A 25-year-old man was not so lucky after he jumped off the Port Hueneme Pier in 2011. The man disappeared under the waves. His body was recovered a week later. His death was ruled an accidental drowning.
